Streaks of light seen in the sky over the Sacramento area on Friday night — shocking some St. Patrick’s Day revelers — were likely caused by burning space debris.

Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, says he’s “99.9% sure it was a Japanese communications antenna jettisoned from the International Space Station in 2020.”
