Are you struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one?

They say impermanence is the only truth of life. We all have read and heard of this. Yet, when someone close to us ventures into the other world, a rush of emotions and insurmountable grief falls upon us. All the world seems to be crashing down and life suddenly seems all grey and purposeless. In these moments, you may experience a sinking feeling in your pit or find yourself breathless. In the gush of emotions, it’s hard to think rationally and find the switch to turn on your light.

If you are dealing with the loss of a loved one, know that ‘this too shall pass’. Yes, it’s hard to believe and may seem unreal now, but eventually the wheel of time will bandage your wounds. Indulge in your grief fully. Accept it, don’t try to escape or deny it. It is only when you pull the arrow backwards you can shoot it forward.

As Dumbledore said in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,

Understanding is the first step to acceptance, and only with acceptance can there be recovery.

After all the rituals and the grieving period is over, start taking baby steps to normalcy. It may seem hard and you may find yourself struggling to even get out of bed, seek help from your family and friends. Talking to them helps! Let them take care of you. Be with the sweet and happy memories of your loved one, but gradually let go of the attachment. Know that they are OK, safe and have moved on to a better journey.

Gradually, make time to do what you love to do. You don’t have to rush to resume work. Go for walks and get some sun. Visit a beach or a riverside if you can as the sight and sound of flowing water eases pain and brings a sense of calm. Listening to soothing or classical music also helps since it has healing powers.

If you know someone who is coping with the death of a loved one, be there for them and accept that they will take their own time to come out of this gradually. Keep checking on them. Make sure they are eating, sleeping and keeping clean. Listening helps and allows them to vent out fully.

Know that your loved one will always be in your heart and spirit. This may not compensate for their physical presence, but their happy memories will infuse you with a warm sense of proximity. Take care and hold on!
