R U OK? - A simple hello could lead to a million things

It is an Australian non-profit suicide prevention organisation. It revolves around the slogan "R U OK?", and advocates for people to have conversations with others. To spread the awareness about this mission, a specific day every year is dedicated.

So what inspired me to pen down my thoughts about it? I overheard one of my colleagues at work saying, Year 2020 has been more of an ‘R U OK’ year instead of an ‘R U OK’ day.

Interesting! Quite an impactful statement.

The year has been a roller coaster ride for some and a fulfilling year for many people. There is nothing in the world that can always be so bad that we cannot find an unseen benefit out of it. Businesses are impacted; the fast-paced life has come to a standstill. However, at the same time, what is a life without a family time? What is a life if you do not have enough time to pause and ask yourselves or your loved ones are u okay?

This year has forced us to look at life from a different lens. When I hear news about thriving plantations, extra ordinary species of flora and fauna resurfacing, I feel the nature is paving its way for surviving. As humans, we are resilient and have ability to express happiness or rage, react and get over it. However, the living world on the receiving end never have an opportunity to express it enough. As humans we forget where to draw a line, the damage that we are causing is a vicious circle.

The year is teaching us how to pause, how to breathe in breathe out and thank the super power for every new day. So don’t think too much, don’t wait for a specific day, father’s day mother’s day friendship’s day or RU Okay day, just pick up your phone or text a message to people around you and check with them if they are okay. Walk up to your family members in the next room and spend some time.

Appreciate being around your family, feel happy that you are able to invest more time into your hobbies, go for that side hustle which was always your impending dream, look for that silver lining and graciously accept the new Normal with flexible mind and open arms.

Let us spread the light of positivity, resilience, well-being for each other so we never have to dedicate a day for such a simple, ordinary yet powerful statement, R U OK!
