Pakistan's Ceasefire Violation in Jammu & Kashmir: Heightening Tensions and Threatening Regional Stability

Hours after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, reports emerged of Pakistan violating the agreement across multiple sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. The ceasefire, proposed by Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to his Indian counterpart, was meant to halt hostilities starting at 5:00 PM on May 10, 2025. However, violations were reported soon after the agreement was made.

The violations included artillery shelling and small arms fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in areas such as Akhnoor, Uri, and Gurez sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani troops targeted Charunda and Hatlanga areas of the Uri sector in north Kashmir's Baramulla district and Bagtore area of Gurez sector in north Kashmir's Bandipora district. Heavy shelling was reported in these areas.

In addition to artillery fire, Pakistan also launched drone attacks in several cities in Jammu and Kashmir, including Jammu and Akhnoor. Udhampur was also attacked by drones, triggering sirens and a blackout. Indian air defense systems successfully engaged and destroyed several drones near Amritsar, close to the Pakistan border. Explosions were also heard in Barmer and Srinagar.

The Indian Army has stated that it has "pulverized" terrorist launchpads near the LoC. Indian forces also shot down multiple Pakistani drones and destroyed several military posts. The Indian response inflicted significant damage, including the destruction of a terrorist launchpad. The BSF also said that it had “completely destroyed” a terrorist launchpad opposite Akhnoor in Jammu, in response to unprovoked firing along the International Border.

Blackouts were enforced in several districts of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Barnala, Sangrur, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Barmer, and Jammu. Authorities in Punjab had initially withdrawn orders pertaining to enforcement of blackout after the ceasefire agreement but reimposed them following the violations.

The recent escalation in tensions followed a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, on April 22, which killed 26 civilians. Following the attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan began ceasefire violations along the LoC. India also launched a precision attack on terrorist launchpads in Pakistan on May 6-7.

Amid the ceasefire violations, the Jammu and Kashmir Government said it is fully prepared to deal with any kind of exigency and has activated its emergency protocols. The government has requested the general public to stay calm and not panic. The BSF has been given a free hand at the border to retaliate against Pakistan, with the response expected to be strong and proportionate to the provocation.
