In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other international figures have called for de-escalation and urged both nations to engage in direct dialogue to find a diplomatic resolution. The call for restraint follows recent cross-border exchanges and heightened military activity, sparked by the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people.

The UK's involvement reflects its close ties with both India and Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Lammy conveyed to his counterparts in both countries that further escalation would be detrimental to all parties involved. He stressed the need for all sides to prioritize regional stability and ensure the protection of civilians. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the serious concerns that rising tensions evoke across Britain.

The UK government has been actively engaging with India and Pakistan, as well as international partners, to encourage dialogue and de-escalation. Hamish Falconer, Foreign Office Minister, reiterated the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in the House of Commons debate on May 7, 2025. He also acknowledged the personal dimension of the conflict for many British Indians and British Pakistanis.

The recent escalation saw India launching strikes, dubbed "Operation Sindoor," on alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan, in turn, claimed to have shot down Indian jets, though this has not been confirmed by India. These events have led to heightened concerns about the potential for a full-blown military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed nations.

The UK is not alone in its call for de-escalation. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged both countries to exercise maximum military restraint. Other nations, including China and Germany, have also appealed for calm and dialogue. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai has called on leaders to prioritize peace and protect civilians, particularly children.

The international community's message to both India and Pakistan is clear: prioritize de-escalation, engage in direct dialogue, and work towards restoring regional stability. The UK has offered its support to both countries in achieving these goals, emphasizing its role as a friend and partner.
