Shashi Tharoor's 'Operation Sindoor' Aims to Provoke Dialogue: An Op-Ed Explains the Symbolic Gesture.

In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people, India launched "Operation Sindoor," a series of strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation, executed by the Indian Armed Forces, involved precision strikes on nine identified locations. These locations were believed to be key planning and staging areas for cross-border terrorist activities.

The Indian government described "Operation Sindoor" as a "focused, measured, and non-escalatory" response to the Pahalgam attack. The strikes aimed to dismantle terrorist infrastructure without causing further escalation of conflict. According to the Defence Ministry, the operation specifically targeted the roots of cross-border terror planning. The targets included headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke and Jaish-e-Mohammad headquarters in Bahawalpur.

Shashi Tharoor, a senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament, voiced his support for the government's actions. He applauded the operation, stating that India had "made our point" in a manner that wouldn't justify further conflict expansion. Tharoor emphasized the importance of calibrated and precise strikes against terror targets. He also expressed solidarity with the armed forces, acknowledging the need for unity during such times.

Tharoor's reaction included a reference to an op-ed he had written, advocating for a "set of calibrated, calculated and precise strikes against terror targets" following the Pahalgam attack. His support for "Operation Sindoor" aligns with his stance on taking strong action against terrorism, while also emphasizing the need for restraint and avoiding escalation.

Reactions to "Operation Sindoor" have been widespread, with many political leaders and citizens expressing their support for the armed forces. Some hailed the operation as a fitting tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam attack. The brother and daughter of victims killed in the Pahalgam terror attack have praised the operation.

However, some opposition leaders questioned whether the operation had gone far enough, asking if every single terrorist had been eliminated. International reactions have been mixed. China called on both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint. The US President Donald Trump hoped for a swift end to the situation.

"Operation Sindoor" has also had an impact on daily life. Flight services in Northern India were affected due to airspace restrictions. Air India had to divert two international flights.

The operation raises important questions about the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, and the strategies for dealing with cross-border terrorism. While India has asserted its right to self-defense, Pakistan has condemned the strikes as unprovoked aggression. The situation remains complex, with concerns about potential escalation and the need for regional stability.
