Mumbai Weather Alert: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain
  • 310 views

Mumbai is experiencing a bout of thunderstorms and heavy rain, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for the city. This alert, effective Tuesday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 7, indicates the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph. The neighboring districts of Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are also under a yellow alert.

The unseasonal, pre-monsoon showers are attributed to a western disturbance at a lower level, which is drawing in significant moisture. The interaction between westerly and easterly winds is contributing to atmospheric instability, leading to the development of thunderstorms. According to Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai, such pre-monsoon showers are typical for this time of year.

While the yellow alert signifies a relatively moderate level of severity, the IMD has advised citizens to exercise caution, particularly during the evening hours. There is a potential for waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic congestion due to the heavy downpour. The showers are expected to bring relief from the recent heat, causing a slight dip in daytime temperatures. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of around 27 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has also issued orange alerts for several districts in Maharashtra, including Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon, Jalna, Satara, and Parbhani. These districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging from 64.5 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours, in isolated locations. The orange alert also warns of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, which could potentially cause tree falls, crop damage, and disruptions to the power supply.

The weather forecast indicates that the current conditions will persist through Wednesday, May 7, after which light rainy conditions are expected in Mumbai on May 8. Following this, the weather is likely to become dry with partly cloudy skies. The IMD is closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and will provide real-time updates as necessary. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed about weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during stormy conditions.
